Home Sperm Test — How to Check Male Fertility at Home?

Home sperm concentration test detects oligozoospermia. Simple test with WHO threshold of 15 million/mL. Discreet, results in 5 minutes.

Male infertility — a hidden problem

Infertility affects approximately 15% of couples of reproductive age worldwide, and the male factor accounts for 40-50% of cases. Yet men undergo fertility testing far less often than women — frequently due to embarrassment, fear of visiting an andrologist, or lack of awareness about available options.

According to the latest research (Levine et al. meta-analysis, 2022), sperm concentration in Western men has dropped by over 50% in the past 50 years. Contributing factors include environmental pollutants (pesticides, phthalates, BPA), lifestyle (obesity, sedentary behavior, stress, smoking, alcohol), and diets low in antioxidants.

The iLabU home sperm test provides a discreet first step in fertility assessment — without needing to visit a clinic.

What does the iLabU sperm test measure?

The OSP-902H test measures sperm concentration in semen. The diagnostic threshold is 15 million sperm per milliliter (M/mL) — the value established by the World Health Organization (WHO, 2021) as the lower limit of normal.

"NORMAL" result (two lines C and T): concentration above 15 M/mL — parameter within WHO norms. "ABNORMAL" result (only C line): concentration below 15 M/mL — oligozoospermia, urologist/andrologist consultation recommended.

Important: the test assesses only concentration, not motility or morphology. A complete fertility evaluation (semen analysis) requires laboratory testing, but concentration is the single most important prognostic parameter.

How to properly collect the sample?

Correct sample collection is crucial for a reliable result:

1. Sexual abstinence: 3-7 days before the test (neither shorter nor longer — too short lowers concentration, too long impairs motility). 2. Collection: by masturbation, directly into the provided container. Do not use condoms (they contain spermicides) or collect from external surfaces. 3. Liquefaction: leave the sample at room temperature for 1 hour. Fresh semen is thick (gel-like) and must liquefy before testing. 4. Don't delay: process the sample within 12 hours of collection.

After liquefaction: fill the transfer device to 0.1 mL, add to the dilution buffer tube, mix by inverting 5-10 times, transfer 2 drops to the cassette, and read after 5 minutes.

What to do if the result is below normal?

An "abnormal" result does not mean sterility — it means sperm concentration is below the WHO threshold and requires further evaluation.

Next steps: 1. Repeat the test in 2-3 months — spermatogenesis takes about 72 days, so temporary factors (fever, stress, medications) can transiently lower concentration. 2. Order a full semen analysis in a laboratory — assessing volume, concentration, motility, morphology, and viability. 3. Consult a urologist/andrologist — physical examination, hormones (FSH, LH, testosterone), testicular ultrasound.

Modifiable lifestyle factors: weight reduction (optimal BMI 20-25), quit smoking and reduce alcohol, avoid heat (saunas, hot baths, laptop on lap, tight underwear), supplementation (folic acid, zinc, selenium, CoQ10, vitamin E), and regular moderate exercise.

Frequently asked questions

Is the test reliable from a single measurement?

A single result is indicative. WHO recommends at least 2 semen analyses 2-3 months apart, as sperm parameters naturally fluctuate. If the home test shows an abnormal result, repeat it in 2-3 months and consult a doctor.

Does a man's age affect fertility?

Yes. After age 40, sperm concentration and motility gradually decline, and the percentage of sperm with damaged DNA increases. However, there is no sharp cutoff like female menopause.

Can diet improve sperm quality?

Yes. A diet rich in antioxidants (fruits, vegetables, nuts, fish), folic acid, zinc, and omega-3 positively affects sperm parameters. Avoid processed food, trans fats, and excessive soy.
